House of Wilderness

New worlds to experience, Outdoor adventure

This business is excellent…

Description

The gateway to wilderness in the alpine Mostviertel region Where wilderness is given space, amazement begins: the House of Wilderness in Lower Austria's Mostviertel region is a modern place of experience and learning around the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal UNESCO World Heritage wilderness area - an area that is home to the largest remnant of primeval forest in the Alpine arc and is only open to highly regulated access. The House of Wilderness uses virtual reality, interactive stations and multi-sensory experiences to make this natural jewel accessible to everyone and allows visitors to explore it independently - impressive, educational and absolutely unique.

With a wealth of ideas and hard work, the dedicated team led by Dr. Christoph Leditznig began construction of the House of Wilderness in Lunz am See in autumn 2019.
The building, which is architecturally oriented towards nature, including the newly created meeting zone around the house, is not only intended to be an international nature competence center for scientists from all disciplines, but above all to serve as a hub and bridge to the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area for interested visitors. The online bookable guided hikes with the wilderness rangers also start from here.

The Rothwald, a primeval forest protected by its namesake Albert Rothschild, was integrated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe" in 2017 and is therefore strictly protected. Nevertheless, interested visitors to the Haus der Wildnis museum can gain an insight into this sensitive ecosystem in an exciting and interactive way. The use of state-of-the-art technology and proven exhibition methods combines the classic museum visit with a special kind of (nature) experience. The themes of primeval forest, wilderness, fauna and flora and why it is so important to protect them are cleverly presented.

A café integrated into the building entices visitors to linger for a while. The adjoining store offers nice souvenirs of an exciting day in the museum for sale.
