About Kunstbuchbinderei Walter Gstettenhofer
The art book bindery combines traditional handicraft techniques such as hand gilding, hand-stitched capitals, thread sewing by hand and elaborate gold, silver and blind embossing with state-of-the-art technology such as laser engraving and laser cutting as well as unique designs.
A small group of specialists in blacksmithing, calligraphy, carpentry, woodturning, carving, painting and goldsmithing are often called upon to make the book an unmistakably unique piece.
The aim is not only to make books, but also to show the possibilities of today and to awaken the desire for a unique piece of one's own. The pictures on the website or the copies in the workshop offer inspiration and invite you to immerse yourself in a special world.
The workshop
Since 2019, the workshop has been located in Böhlerwerk, where most of the work is made by hand. There are therefore only a few machines in the workshop, some of which are very old, some of which are ultra-modern and meet special requirements. These include a toggle press, various book presses, hand gilding tools and fillets, which are among the valuable helpers. Metal and wooden inlays as well as various embossing and pressing techniques are used almost daily.
Thanks to an extensive collection of machines and tools for wood and metal processing and an inexhaustible spirit of invention, even complex aids and tools can often be produced in-house. This opens up a broad spectrum of book production.
