Ice cream road

Along the Eisstraße you will find many sights that you might not normally visit due to their hidden location. For example, the Gerold Chapel in Ortisei, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view from Ötscher to Gesäuse or the orchid meadow Konradsheim with its colorful flowers.
Already seen?

Many villages with small destinations such as particularly beautiful bridges, churches and monuments are worth visiting and discussing. The almost 40 km long route can be experienced not only by car, but also and this is our special tip to you, by bike, Vespa or train. So you can plan your route according to your mood. Look forward to green hills, cool rivers and panoramic mountain views!
Ice cream stores and coffee houses traditional and modern

Not to be forgotten are the namesake coffee houses, pastry shops and ice cream parlors. Enjoy fresh, handmade ice cream and pastry specialties. The Salzburger Nockerl and the ice cream omelettes offered at Gasthof Nell are quite outstanding. Both in Waidhofen a/d Ybbs and in Steyr, you will find an award-winning ice cream store with delicious ice cream varieties, made from regional (organic) products: the traditional family-run confectionery Piaty for more than 100 years and the ice cream producer Buburuza Eis, which is known far beyond Steyr. In 2022, both businesses have once again achieved a top spot in the Falstaff survey of the most popular ice cream parlors in Lower and Upper Austria! Congratulations!

Not only for eating ice cream but also for the rest of the excellent cuisine, the houses on the Eisstraße are known: Absolutely recommendable are for example the inns Schatzöd and Seisenbacher in Konradheim as well as the inn Wendtner and Leitner in Ertl.

Also worth mentioning is the large amount of space that is offered to the visitors of the ice cream stores. Waidhofen an der Ybbs, which has only 11,000 inhabitants, has 16 Schanigärten in the city center alone, which in a population comparison offer about 10 times as much space as Vienna. Steyr, too, has a disproportionately large number of outdoor cafés in the city center.

Ice cream connects

Coming from Buburuza Eis and heading towards Waidhofen, you will cross the Upper Austria/Lower Austria state border several times, passing the historic borders that divided the American from the Russian occupation zone after World War II. After this country slalom, you will then continue either via Ertl with its famous lookout tower, the Voralpen Warte through cooling woodland or via the pilgrimage site of Maria Neustift to Konradsheim.

This place is already part of Waidhofen an der Ybbs and awaits with 2 special visit possibilities, which are little known so far. A mountain cemetery decorated almost continuously with wrought iron crosses and the "high Niglo church", (access possible directly to the church) whose name patron St. Nicholas, instead of the traditional golden balls golden apples and pears as his holy symbols. The golden Mostviertel can probably not be expressed more beautifully.
Cup or Stanitzl?

With all the beautiful sights, there is always one thing that is not neglected: ice cream. Well over 30 businesses can be counted along the ice road and somewhere someone always has their doors and showcases open. During your ice cream breaks, explore the surroundings and get to know your home town or vacation resort with relish. No matter from which side you start your ice journey, wonderful "ice city squares" are waiting for you at the destination point!
