Dürrenstein (Gipfel)

Mountain summit, Scenic lookout

Description

South of Lake Lunz, the 1,878 m high Dürrenstein offers one of the most untouched landscapes in Lower Austria; at the northern foot of the mountain lies the Rothwald, the largest primeval forest in Central Europe. Thanks to the "Wilderness Area Dürrenstein" project, a large part of the area has been placed under nature protection, allowing diverse eastern alpine animal and plant species to flourish undisturbed. Only in guided hikes it is allowed to visit these zones, so as not to disturb the ecosystem. Away from the nature reserve, however, the Dürrenstein and Noten peaks as well as the Großer Hühnerkogel and Kleines Hirzeck can be hiked and discovered in a varied way: The routes captivate with charming karst formations, exciting caves and rich flora and fauna. If you even climb to the summit, it is best to spend the night in the Ybbstalerhütte, which offers plenty of space and the best food for an extensive rest.

Recommended hiking routes:
